Raised in Fort Worth, TX, SONO.GRIOT took to creating and remixing music at an early age, playing keyboards and sampling records from his father’s extensive collection of Funk, Rock, Jazz, and more eclectic vinyl. With a wide palette to learn and choose from, GRIOT was able to explore the possibilities of blending seemingly opposing elements into one creation. Influenced by early recordings by the Bomb Squad, he sought to explore the possibilities of Hip Hop within the budding DFW scene and help break the “formula” of popular music.

Not until moving to Atlanta, GA, to attend Clark Atlanta University for Radio, Television and Film, did the possibilities become more tangible. GRIOT learned the basics of cutting, blending and mixing from a college roommate and worked listening parties, promotional events and university functions staying reasonably close to the expected musical format. Writing for a Hip Hop magazine and travelling to New York for the first time(s) would sow seeds for later endeavors. After leaving Clark, GRIOT recorded and performed with multiple line ups of Indie Rock, Trip Hop, and Electronica on Keyboards, samples, and programming.

Prior to graduating from Georgia State University, an “easy A” elective became a perspective changing musical education. A World Music course that studied the rhythms of Africa, to the ceremonial chants of Native Americans, helped to show how genres and labels start to disappear when more cultures are compared. GRIOT found American Bebop and Indian Ragas were akin as African drumming and UK Jungle. He proceeded to add these new influences and approaches to scales, modes and broken rhythms in the Indie band that he was playing with at the time.

SONO.GRIOT returned to Texas after graduation, seeking a new direction and way to remix all of the influences and knowledge gathered from his bands and studies. Making multiple trips to Brooklyn to hone his turntable technique with additional instruction would permanently add decks the audio arsenal. To find or create an urban alternative scene to help expose these underappreciated genres and artists is the primary mission. Turntables, as well as keyboards and samplers for full live shows, are the main tools for live mixing and remixing of music of all genres for the feet and neck muscles.
